A native of McMinn County, he was born on May 27, 1933, to the late Tom and Cora Roberts.
He received his education in McMinn County public schools. Afterwards, he served in the U.S. Armed Forces. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one son, Nate Pickel; four brothers, Theodore Roberts, Ben Roberts, James Roberts, and Orlando Roberts; and two sisters, MaeDella Mayotte and Ada Bailey.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Dolina Roberts; two children, Maurice Roberts and Debra N. Roberts; three grandchildren, Ashley Roberts, Brittany Roberts, and Lakiesha Bates; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Charlie (Leath) Roberts; a host of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; a devoted sister and brother-in-law, Lillian Gaines and James Morris; four loving relatives as best friends, Geraldine Wright, Joann Billingsley, Grace Mosely, and Alice Mae Scruggs; a loving neighbor, Jacquelyn Bofer; and a host of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home of Athens with the Rev. William H. Ryan III officiating.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home from 12:30 until 1 p.m.
Interment will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens with a military honor guard.
