Jack V. Shaffer, 75, of Grafton, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014, at New Life Hospice in Lorain, following a brief illness. He was born May 28, 1939 in Marshallville, Ohio, to the late Lloyd and Lois (nee Jenkins).

He married Lesley (nee McCulloch) on February 5, 1962. Jack retired from the U.S. Navy, as a Master Chief Petty Officer, after 24 years, serving in such places as Spain, England, Hawaii, Japan, and Vietnam, earning various commendations and awards. He was also retired from Boeing Company and Northrup Grumman Aerospace, where he worked as a senior engineer. Jack was a member of VFW Post #1079, and was a dedicated 32nd Degree Mason. Since retiring, Jack enjoyed playing computer games, keeping up with politics, and telling "old war stories" to his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lesley (nee McCulloch) of 52 years; daughter, Belinda (Paul) Shaffer-Konkel of San Diego, California; son, Jason (Artie) Shaffer of Avon Lake; grandchildren, PFC Nicholas Shaffer, USMC of Pensacola, Florida (formerly of N. Ridgeville) and Isaac, Ian and Isabella Shaffer, all of Avon Lake; sisters, Kathleen (Cory) Donaldson of Akron and Martha Lee Jenkins of Circleville; two brothers-in-law, Thomas and Michael McCulloch; numerous nieces and nephews; and Nicholas' mother, Maureen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Lois (nee Jenkins); his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Doreen McCulloch; and beloved grandson, Jamie Crotty (Belinda's son).

Memorial service and burial will be held 11 A.M., Friday, August 8, 2014, in Brookdale Cemetery, where full military honors will be provided by VFW Post #1079. Pastor Chuck Behrens, Chaplain of the Hospice of the Western Reserve, will officiate.
