"Practiced law briefly in Mt Sterling, Kentucky in the 1890's before building a lucrative practice in New York City.

A member of the 'Controversial Club', a group of the most prominent younger men about town. It was formed in 1893, to be part of a YMCA then being organized in the Tyler-Apperson Building. The "Y" failed but the club remained, and in 1894 the group began having annual banquets. These gala occasions, held first at the National Hotel and then at the Beaumont Hotel were apparently one of the social highlights of the season. After a lavish dinner the members replied to a series of toasts, apparently with wit and humor. The 20-25 members represented a who's who of the town, especially of the moderately young members of the town's elite-Reid Rogers, R H & John Y Winn, and Charles Grubbs-as well as T J Bigstaff, H R French, and other older men, with a dandy or two like J G Trimble Jr."
