Henry J. Lipscomb was born 6 July 1826 in Preston County, Va. He married LYDIA L. “LIDDIE” JUDY 13 January 1859 at Tucker County, Va.
Liddie was born about April 1840, the daughter of Daniel Judy (Judah) and Judah “Judy” McCallister. Liddie’s father is profiled in an 1884 county history: “Daniel Judah, of Virginia, is of German descent; married Judah McCallister in 1826, whose name then became Judah Judah.
Daniel Judah was working in the harvest field on his wedding day and quit work at the appointed hour, went to the house, was married, and then returned immediately to the field. Children: Mary, Nancy, Elizabeth, Sarah and Lydia. He came to West Virginia in 1834, and lived for a while on Stemple Ridge; and he then moved to the farm where S. N. Swisher now lives. After that he lived nearly every place on Horse Shoe Run.” Two other daughters of Daniel Judy (Judah) married to brothers of Henry J. Lipscomb: Nancy Catherine Judy married John F. Lipscomb, and Sarah Frances Judy married Jacob “Jake” Lipscomb.

Henry and Liddie (Judy) Lipscomb named their first child after Liddie’s sister Elizabeth Judy.

Henry J. Lipscomb’s farm was situated near Hile Run, just below Leadmine in Tucker County. Among his neighbors, Henry was known as “Mountain Henry” or “Old Smokey Henry.”

Apparently Henry and Liddie separated before 1900, when Liddie was listed as “divorced” in the census taken that year. However, they were living together in 1910. Neither of them could read or write. Liddie died of “old age” 14 October 1914 at Horseshoe Run.

Henry died there of “age” on 22 June 1916. Henry and Liddie are likely buried on their farm, but the graves have no monuments.
