Clayton lived in Seattle his entire life. As a young man, Clayton C Caldwell was a seaman. The 1930 US Census places him in Juneau, Alaska, working on the U.S. Coast Guard cutter "Unalga".
He married Eleanora Y Dusenberry on December 4, 1931, in Skagit City, Washington.
Clayton was an Able Bodied Seaman on the M.S. Norco, sailing from Prince Rupert B.C. to Seattle and the President McKinley from Shangai to Seattle in 1934. Clayton was a passenger on Northwest Airlines flight 821 from Seattle to Anchorage in 1948.
He died in 1962 at the age of 53, and was buried in Everett, Washington in the Evergreen Cemetery.
