A celebration of his life was held on August 7, 2014 with family and friends.
He served in the US Army from September, 1960 to 1966. He retired as a truck driver from Yellow Freight.
He was preceded in death by his father Chester Barnes, mother Ruby Barnes, and grandson Adam Blackerby. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, J. B. Montgomery.
He is survived by three children, Cathryn Smith of Dallas, Georgia, Elizabeth Cotton of West Point, Georgia and Chuck Barnes of Etta, Mississippi. He is also survived by his sister Ruby Ann Montgomery. He is survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
