LOUDONVILLE: James "Jim" S. Lingenfelter Sr., 56, passed away peacefully at his Loudonville home on August 3, 2014 after a long battle with corticobasal syndrome.
Jim was a lifelong community servant and loving family man. He was born in Loudonville to the late Jacque R. and Ruth C. (Workman) Lingenfelter on December 16, 1957, and was the first baby born by Cesarean section in the new Kettering Hospital.
Jim was a 1976 graduate of Loudonville High School where he played football and was a member of the undefeated 1975 Redbird football team. He was a 1980 graduate of Capital University, where he continued his football career for two years and served as president of the Kappa Iota Lambda fraternity during his senior year. On July 26, 1980 he married his high school sweetheart, Elise Donelson.
After spending a year working for Kmart Corporation in Cleveland, Jim and Elise returned to Loudonville when Jim was recruited by First National Bank of Ashland (now National City Bank) to manage its Loudonville branch. In 1988 he began working for Farmers and Savings Bank. He was named president in 1998 and retired from the position in 2012.
Jim's creativity knew no bounds. He was a talented carpenter, often remodeling his house, assisting with renovations of the Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill, or helping build play sets for the Loudonville High School drama club and Loudonville Players. He also loved music, performing with the Loudonville Players and playing trombone in the Mid-Ohio Concert Band.
Jim was committed to using his talents to improve his community and beyond. He was an elder and founding member of New Hope Community Church. He was a longtime member of the Mohican Area Growth Foundation (President 1991-92), Rotary Club of Loudonville (President 1988-89), Mohican Area Business Association, and Loudonville-Mohican Area Chamber of Commerce from which he received the Community Service Award in 2001. His service extended to surrounding communities including Ashland, where he served on the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Hugo and Mabel Young Foundation as member, secretary, treasurer, and president.
Jim also invested time in community youth, advocating for the L-P Schools levy campaigns, teaching leadership workshops in local classrooms, and supporting Teen Institute, a teen drug prevention organization. He helped coach boys in Pee Wee Football who went on to play in the 1990 high school state tournament. He also supported the Loudonville Youth Soccer Association and LHS athletics and music programs.
He is survived by his wife, Elise; his children, Loren A. (Adam) Hackett, James S. Lingenfelter, Jr., and Erin Lingenfelter; foster daughters, Audra Snyder and Christy (Dale) Nawrocki; brother, Jacque R. (Joyce) Lingenfelter, Jr., and sister, Ann (Jay) Bitner. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning, August 7 at 10:00 AM in New Hope Community Church, Loudonville with Pastors Rob Paterson and Jeff Cooper, officiating.
