SALEM - Freda L. Phillips, 81, of 1398 South Lincoln Ave., died at 2:07 a.m. Friday, at Salem Community Hospital. She was born April 30, 1924 in Salineville, the daughter of the late Emmett and Nettie (Moore) Smith.
She was a cook and restaurant manager for 40 years, managing Votaw's Restaurant for 30 of those years and was well known for her cooking and pie baking. Freda also worked in the Office of the Aging in Lisbon for 10 years. She was a member of Faith Chapel Fellowship in Salem.
Surviving are four sons, Leonard W. (Kathy) Phillips of Salem, Larry L. (Randy) Phillips, Sr. of Alliance, David "Pete" (Becky) Phillips of Salem, and Charles (Debbie) Phillips of Guilford; two daughters, Karen (Bud) Morris of Beloit and Sharon (Kay) (Stephen) Rea of Salem; three sisters, Violet Woodall and Dorothy Smith, both of Hanoverton and Betty Sell of Robertsville; a brother, Eugene F. Smith of Florida; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was four brothers, Donald Smith, Floyd Smith, Emmett Smith, Jr. and Forrest Smith and three sisters, Helen Votaw, Virginia Bierlair, and Gladys Hall.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with Larry Paxson officiating. Burial will be in Woodsdale Cemetery in Hanoverton. Calling hours will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Memorial Fund, Faith Chapel Fellowship, 1348 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem, Ohio 44460.
