Civil War records of 26th Illinois Infantry, company H. Marcellus Winters mustered in service February 16, 1865 at Camp Butler, Illinois, in 26th Illinois Infantry, company H. He was a farmer, age 25, born in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania. He had hazel eyes, dark hair and a height of 5'8". His residence was Harlem, Stephenson county, Illinois. He mustered out of service July 20, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky, after the end of the civil war. He married May 28, 1863 in Stephenson county, Illinois to Margaret Leibhart. In Freeport Journal-Standard, page 8, February 22, 1905: Died at Fort Scott.
Marcellus Winters, an oldtime resident of Stephenson county and a veteran of the civil war, died yesterday at Fort Scott, Kansas. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Winters of Freeport and the following children: Sidney, Arthur and Nellie of Freeport; Mrs. S. H. Anderson of Chicago; Mrs. George Mogle of Kent; Reverend William Winters of Fort Worth, Texas; and John Winters of Kansas City, Missouri. Three brothers also survive: Abe and Cornelius of Kansas and John of Eleroy, Illinois. Mr. Winters was born in Pennsylvania February 20, 1840 and was therefore just one day past 85 years at the time of his death. The family removed (from Penn.) to Stephenson county, Illinois, when the decedent was one year old and settled on a farm near Eleroy. He enlisted in company H, 26th Illinois Infantry on February 16, 1865 and mustered out July 20, 1865. Arthur Winters left last night for Fort Scott to attend the funeral.
