She was born in Brooklyn, NY and had lived in New Jersey and Illinois before coming to Wilmington in 1956. She had attended Pembroke College. During her years in Delaware, she was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of The Covenant and an enthusiastic volunteer for the Girl Scouts of America, the Wilmington Symphony Women's Auxiliary, the Flower Market and numerous other community organizations.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Russell Akin and Thomas Dowling. She is survived by her son of Wilmington DE, and daughters in Richmond VA and Stephens City, VA. She also leaves 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
