Charles Elmore Andrew, 94, of Gering, died August 2, 2014 at Northfield Villa Retirement Center in Gering.Charles "Chuck" was born on the Andrew homestead north of Morrill, Nebraska to Orin C. Andrew and Ethel M.(Gaylord) Andrew in December of 1919; the youngest of three brothers. He received his education at the Morrill Schools, graduating in 1939, and attended W.N.C.C. (then Scottsbluff Junior College) for one year.He enlisted in the army in January of 1942 at Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he was trained as an ordinance specialist. He served in that capacity in San Antonio, Texas for two years, one year in Jackson, Mississippi, and one year in the Philippine Islands. While stationed in San Antonio, Chuck was married to his high school sweetheart, Twyla Williams, on May 9, 1942 at the Post Chapel by an army chaplain who quipped, "When I tie a knot, it STAYS tied!" They were married for 69 years.When Staff Sargent Andrew returned home from the Philippines, he was greeted by Twyla and his infant daughter, Rebecca (Becky). Three years later, they were blessed with twin daughters, Joyce and Joanne. His love and devotion to his family was always unconditional.Charles farmed the family homestead for fifteen years, worked as shop foreman for Chester B. Brown Company in Morrill for a few years, then opened his own business, Morrill Welding & Machine in 1966. He retired in 1986.He was an avid hunter, camper, hiker, astronomer and fisherman, possessed an immense respect for God's creation and nature, and was a lover of animals. He displayed great faith and inner strength. Even during the difficult last few years of his life, his quick wit and sense of humor amused and delighted all who knew him.While in Morrill, Chuck served on the Morrill Village Council, the Methodist Church board, was master of the Morrill Masonic Lodge, and a lifetime member of the Morrill Volunteer Fire Department.In 1999 he and Twyla moved to Cody, Wyoming where they resided until Twyla's death in 2011. He then returned to Nebraska.
Charles is survived by his three daughters Becky (Joe )Lynn of Cody, Wyoming, Joyce Hake of Morrill, and Joanne Kerr of Mitchell, eight grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ralph and Harold.
