Obituary from HL Herald - Paul Arthur Zander, age 65, of Alexandria, formerly of Howard Lake, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at his home.
He was born in Howard Lake May 12, 1943, to Gerald and Helen (Smith) Zander. Paul grew up in Howard Lake, and graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1961.
After graduation, Paul went to work for Fillbrandt and Son Excavating in Excelsior.
Paul and Carol (Scheiber) were married Aug. 6, 1964. To this union, five children were born.
In 1971, Paul took over his father's business, Zander Construction Inc., which he continued successfully for 26 years.
In 1997, Paul and Carol moved to Alexandria, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator, first for Zacher Excavating, then Tradesman Construction, retiring in 2007.
Paul enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was also a NASCAR fan, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and his 1955 Chevy.
He was a member of the Alexandria Eagles, the Viking Sportsmans Club, and a former member of the Howard Lake Lions.
Paul is survived by his wife, Carol; sons Michael of Battle Lake, Steven of England, James (Christina) of Annandale, and David (Amy) of Maple Lake; grandchildren Bradley, Travis, Stephanie, Jennifer, Francesca, Sebastien, Joseph, Noah, Alison, and Nathan; and a great-grandson, Benjamin.
He is further survived by his mother, Helen; brothers Bruce (Carol), and Brian (Diana), all of a Howard Lake; a sister, Nyla (Wayne) Paulson of Kimball; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Val and JoAnn LePage of Waverly, and Sylvan and Kathy Stephani of Minnetonka; along with many nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by a son Mark; a granddaughter, Samantha; his father, Gerald; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Josephine Scheiber.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly. Interment was in Howard Lake City Cemetery.
Visitation was Friday, Feb. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Alexandria, and continued Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Waverly, preceding the service.
Pallbeares were Wayde Paulson, Dan Zander, Tim LePage, Bob Stephani, Gene Sullivan, and Jim Workman.
