Served in the Civil War in three units: Co. F, 2nd Michigan Infantry; then Co. I of the 103rd NY Infantry (with his brother Benjamin A); then Co. G of the 147th NY Infantry. Records say he lost a finger in Battle of the Wilderness.

He married Caroline A Prosser (1845-78) of Yates Co NY, and they had several children (Lodema, Clarissa, Oliver, Warren, Mary). After her death he remarried 1879 Areanna Woodyard (1862-1918) of Cabell County West Virginia and they had two children (Alice, Charles E).
