The Sioux County Pioneer published this obituary on the front page on January 25, 1917: "The funeral of Baptist Pierre who died last week, was held Sunday from the Catholic church where the body laid in state Saturday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Bernard, and interment was made in the church cemetery. The St. Joseph and St. Mary's Societies of which he was a member, attended the services in a body. On account of the storm a number of people were prevented from attending the funeral, but considering the weather the attendance was large. Baptist Pierre was 62 years old at the time of death, and his untimely demise is mourned by a large circle of friends and relatives. From 1892 to 1898 he was assistant farmer of the Agency district, but since then had made his home about ten miles north of Fort Yates, where he owned a large body of land. He was also the owner of a large herd of horses and cattle."
Although his year of birth was engraved on his headstone as 1868, census records consistently listed 1855 or 1856 as his birth year. And, he died at age 62 in 1917 which also would place his birth as 1855. Pierre's first name was sometimes spelled and pronounced in the French manner as Baptiste and other times in the Lakota manner as Baptist.
