Dwight was the son of Otis Lewis Roy Newton and Grace Marguerite Thompson. Dwight was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up there with his brother Sherwood. Dwight wrote and sold Western stories while still in college and went on to author many books and continued writing and consulting in Hollywood for western-themed shows. He was one of the original members who began the Western Writers of America Inc. Long interested in history he was also interested in genealogy, something he inherited from his father. Eventually the family relocated to Bend, Oregon where they still reside.
