Emma Margaret Vanderau, 82, of 147 Garber St., died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 1992, in Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an illness of one year.

Born Oct. 5, 1910, in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Val Edward and Sally C. Kyle Vanderau.

A veteran of World War II, she was a first lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force.

She was a 1927 graduate of Chambersburg High School, a 1931 graduate of Wilson College and a 1932 graduate of Shippensburg University. She received a master's degree in blochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and took continuing education studies at Wilson College from 1978 to 1981 in Creek, Greek and Latin roots in English, physical geology, Greek art and archaeology.

She was a member of American Chemistry Society; American Association of Clinical Chemists; American Association for the Advancement of Science; National Registry in Clinical Chemistry; Archaeological Insitute of America; East African Wildlife Society of America; Franklin County Heritage Inc.; Franklin County Wilson Club; Archaeological University Museum, Philadelphia; Franklin County Rock and Mineral Club; and the local Archaeological Society.

From 1933 to 1935, she was employed as histology technician at Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia; from 1935 to 1943, she was acting head of the clinical chemistry department at University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia; from 1946 to 1949, she taught chemistry, physics and general science at the Dependents School, Frankfurt a/Main, Germany; from 1950 to 1967, she was chief clinical chemist at Presbyterian Hospital, Philadelphia; and from 1967 until her retirement in 1972, she was assistant director of clinical chemistry at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia.

Surviving are a brother, Val W. Vanderau of 95 Edgewater Drive.
