Bettye Jan Bagwell Vermeulen was born July 29, 1944, to the late Dr. Robert Wayne and Josephine Kelln Bagwell of Borger, Texas.

She passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona July 23, 2014 with her loyal husband and companion of thirteen years, Larry Vermeulen, by her side.

Celebration of Life Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 4, 2014, at Claude United Methodist Church in Claude with Fr. James Schmitmeyer, St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Claude, 200 Parks Ave.

Jan was independent as a child, daring and adventurous as a young woman, talented and creative as a young mother, beautiful, and stylish, and a true trendsetter and leader throughout her life. She had an eye for beauty and fashion. At age 16 she attended John Robert Powers modeling school in Dallas. In her twenties she modeled for Swartz department store in Big Spring, Texas. She owned and operated Biarritz Gallery, interior design services featuring custom made draperies and fine fabrics.

She was an excellent cook, gardener, seamstress, travel agent and blackjack dealer.

What we all loved so much in her was her spirit; that inner radiance she at times was so successful in hiding. It was that light that we all saw in her and that we knew was always present. It expressed itself as art and beauty, as generosity, as leadership, as strength, vitality, flair, style and as caring sweetness.

Her daughter Lisa Powell and husband Clay of Lubbock, Texas, son Brandon Iden and wife Neasa of Big Spring, Texas, grandchildren Berkley, Brayden and Braxton Iden, Grant and McKeely Underwood and Madeline Powell, brother Robert Bagwell and wife Kathryn of Dallas, Texas, sister Terese Hammerle-Kelley and husband Ed Kelley of Watertown, Massachusetts and numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved Louie survive her. She is predeceased by sister Suzanne Colpitts.
