Viola Josephine Jarosh was born March 19, 1918, the daughter of Albert and Agnes (Klimsh) Jarosh in Little Turkey. She attended school at Holy Trinity in Protivin. She married Gabriel Houdek Oct. 27, 1936, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin.

Together they farmed north of Cresco, near Davis Corners, and then in Kendallville, returning to the Davis Corners farm. They had a farm sale and moved six miles north of Calmar, where they remodeled a schoolhouse, where they lived. She did in-home health care and also worked as a custodian at Luther College. She made a quilt and afghan for each of her family members, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, crocheting and embroidery. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, ladies circle and TOPS.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gabriel; two daughters, Luanne Houdek in infancy and Loretta Marhoul in 1987; one grandson, Shon Houdek in 1999; two sons-in-law, George Marhoul and Ed Jertson in 2005; two brothers, Vendelin Jarosh in 1987 and George Jarosh in 1998.
