Retired Army Maj. Evert Nolten, 89, of 700 Mease Plaza, Dunedin, Fla., husband of former Sandy Creek resident Martha Chamberlain Cannon Nolten, died May 21 in a Dunedin nursing home.

A private graveside service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The body was cremated.
Local arrangements are with Summerville Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, a former resident of Sandy Creek.
He was born in 1902 in Rotterdam, Holland. Mr. Nolten joined the Holland American Shipping Lines at an early age and served in the Dutch Army Field Observation.

Mr. Nolten later joined the U.S. Army after becoming an American citizen. He saw duty in China, the Philippines and Germany, while working his way up to the rank of major. After World War II, Mr. Nolten served as a military governor in Germany and then as a deployment officer for the troops returning home from the war.

He retired from the Army after 32 years of service.
