Poet. Initially an optimistic pacifist while serving as a nurse in Switzerland during World War I, he wrote poems that depicted the suffering of soldiers involved in the fighting. Eventually he became a bitter, scathing critic of all proponents of war, including governments, politicians, and even soldiers.
