Prominent Woman of Charlotte Dies in Charleston, S. C.— Funeral Here.


Mrs. Addle Virginia Mason Barron, widow of the late Rev. Dr. A. C. Barron, for many years pastor of the First Baptist church here, died suddenly last night at Charleston, S. C., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dabney R. Yarbrough, where she had been for some time. Death was due to an attack of acute indigestion which she suffered shortly before nine o'clock. The distressing news came in a telegram to Mrs. Barron’s daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Withers. She was apparently in good health and spirits until she suffered the sudden attack last evening. The remains will be brought here for burial in Elmwood cemetery beside
the body of her late husband. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Mrs. Barron had been a resident of Charlotte since 1896. at which time she came here with her husband. Dr. Barron, and children when her husband became pastor of the First Baptist Church, which was then known as the Tryon Street Baptist church. Since the death of her husband on August 19, 1905, Mrs. Barron has lived here with her daughter, Mrs. Lloyd C. Withers at No. 3 East Vance Street. She left Charlotte for Charleston the middle of September intending to spend the winter with her daughters, Mrs. Dabney R. Yarbrough and Mrs. Earle S. Pegram.

Mrs. Barron was 65 years of age. She was born September 15 1852, in Hanover Ccounty, Va., and was a daughter of the late Claiborne Rice Mason, a prominent railroad builder,
and Winifred Drusella Boxly. On January 6, 1874, she was married to Dr. Barron. To them were bom five children, four of whom survive.

Immediately on her arrival in Charlotte, Mrs. Barron became not only a leader in all activities connected with the First Baptist church but became also a leader in many lines of activity in city life. In all enterprises connected with woman's work whether in her own church or in the other circles of the city she was an influential factor. She was one of the founders and a charter member of the Eclectic Book Club and was for many years one of the most influential and aggressive members of Stonewall Jackson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. taking a leading part in all its activities for the public good. A woman of splendid intellectual attainments, of magnetic personality and great beauty of Christian life, she naturally assumed an important role in the circles in which she moved and her influence for good in the city has been
incalculable.

Mrs. Barron is survived by four daughters. Mrs. Yarbrough and Mrs. Pegram. of Charleston; Mrs. Graves, of Virginia, and Mrs. Withers, of Charlotte. Two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Harris, of Lewisburg, W. Va., and Mrs. Robert Goodwin, of Staunton, Va., and sixteen grandchildren also survive.
