Jean was an American psychiatrist, physician, and a member of the Communist Party. She is best remembered for her romantic relationship with J. Robert Oppenheimer, scientific leader of the Manhattan Project.


Jean went to Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts before enrolling in Vassar. She graduated in 1935 and then went to Berkeley to complete prerequisites for medical school. She later attended Stanford University Medical School, which was then located in San Francisco, and graduated in 1941 as a psychiatrist. She became a physician in the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Zion Hospital which is now the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
