Mrs. Payne was born November 20th, 1921 in Forsyth County, a daughter to the late Charles and Viola Ballard Marshall. A resident of this area most of her life, she was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and manager of Mayberry's for over 30 years. Prior to that, she worked at Colonial Freezer Locker. Margaret was a loving and kindhearted person who cared for others and loved her family and grandchildren. You could always find her driving friends to doctor's appointments, taking food to her neighbors and socializing with her many customers at Mayberry's. In 1940 she married Howard Davis Payne who preceded her in death in 2009. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded by a sister, Ina Mae Bodenheimer and brother, Weldon Marshall.
Surviving is a daughter, Alice Hodgin and husband James of Kernersville; a son, Ronald Davis Payne and wife Corine of High Point; four grandchildren, James (Tom) Hodgin and wife Margie, Anthony (Matt) Hodgin, Gwen Payne and Cindy Kennedy and husband Ronnie; seven great grandchildren, Alexus Kennedy, Ashely Kennedy, J. William Hodgin, A. Gregory Hodgin, Adam Kennedy, Jonathan DeLapaz and Calvin Vinson; and one great-great grandchild, Jasper DeLapaz.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point with Dr. James A. Summey officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr. High Point, NC 27262 or to His Laboring Few Ministries, 812 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Thomasville, NC 27360.
