Daughter of Anthony Lasky and Kathryn Kobialka Lasky.

Paternal Grandparents: Joseph Lasky and Tekla Golen Lasky.

Maternal Grandparents: Tomas Kobialka and Marie Piwowar Kobialka.

Husband: Andrew Frank, married on Feb. 5, 1924. He died in 1980.

Daughter: Thelma Irene
Granddaughter: Roxane Irene

Irene was fluent in Polish and English. Irene came from a prominent Polish family in New Castle. Her father, Anthony, was a banker and Insurance Agent. When the depression hit, Anthony lost most of his money. The family moved to a farm, where Irene grew up. Upon reaching adulthood, Irene met Andrew Frank. Irene and Andrew were married in the Catholic church. They were members of ST. Philip and James Church. Andy and Irene moved to Detroit, MI, but soon returned to New Castle, PA. They opened a cafe called the "5 cent lunch". Their only living child to reach adulthood was a daughter, Thelma and she was born in 1930. Irene gave birth to two stillborn children: one male and one female. When Irene developed tuberculosis in the early 1930's, they decided to close the restaurant. Andy had to look for other work. He obtained a job with the WPA.

Irene was sent to a sanitarium to recover from TB. She fought hard and survived the battle with tuberculosis, leaving only one lung. She returned home to New Castle, PA. She lived and raised her daughter, Thelma. Irene was very intelligent and had perfect pitch. She was an avid reader. She taught Thelma piano and voice. Irene entered Thelma in a Shirley Temple look-alike contest: Thelma won first prize. Irene was so proud of her daughter. When a granddaughter arrived, (Roxane), Irene taught her writing, reading, spelling and arithmetic. Her pride was her Granddaughter, Roxane. Irene enjoyed cooking, canning, music and sewing. She loved to cook Italian food for her husband Andy. In her free time, she liked to complete crossword puzzles, and the harder the better. She enjoyed canning and made the best apple butter! Irene loved animals, especially her little Pekingese, the most precious dog named "Little Won" (see photo). She also owned a Collie named Chips. Irene had a "green thumb" and could grow anything. She had a huge lilac tree and a weeping willow tree. They were beautiful trees. She loved hummingbirds.

In the early 1960's, Irene developed uterine cancer. Irene was a very proud woman and thought she could fight off the cancer within her. She lasted for a long period of time and was very ill. She even went to court to battle a Philadelphia attorney to save her property on Long Avenue, while she wore a catheter. Her husband provided a hospital bed at home. Finally, she was taken to the hospital. She received cobalt treatments in the hospital. Unfortunately, she was not able to fight off it's wrath. She passed away from pneumonia in Dec 1962. She was a very brave lady and was determined to win over the cancer, just as she had won over the TB.
