"Mrs. Martha Rockefeller died suddenly at 7:30 a.m., on Thursday last at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William D. Abell at Fort Hunter. She had made arrangements to go to Schenectady to spend Easter and to celebrate the birthday of her eldest daughter, Mrs. L. J. Gordon which occurred on Easter Sunday. She arose apparently in her usual health and after finishing her breakfast, she went into the sitting room and sat down upon the couch. Her daughter noticed a peculiar look on her face and asked if she were ill. She said she couldn't breathe well. Spirits of ammonia were given immediately and everything possible was done to relieve her but within twenty minutes death had claimed her. Martha Hand, was the only child of Jeptha Hand and Nancy Miller and was born at St. Johnsville 69 years ago last July. She was united in marriage to George Rockefeller whom she survived 29 years. Mrs. Rockefeller possessed a bright and cheerful disposition and was ever ready to do a kindness for others. She was a true mother, always evidencing a self-sacrificing spirit in her home and toward her loved ones. Her memory will live in the hearts of those who loved her and were helped by her until time shall end. She was a member of the English Methodist Church ... Mrs. Rockefeller was the mother of five children four of whom survive, her only son, Earl, a young man of much promise died 15 years ago. Those left to mourn her loss are; Mrs. L. J. Gordon, Schenectady, Mrs. Irving Gordon, and Mrs. Warner Van Dreser, both of Lawyersville and Mrs. William D. Abell of Fort Hunter. Her only grandson, George W. Abell came close to her motherly heart seemingly taking the place of the son she had 'loved and lost awhile.'" [The Cobleskill Index (Cobleskill, NY), April 5, 1923, Page 4]
