Jack Winston Snyder, 72, of Quincy, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 11:25 am in his home after several years of declining health.

Jack's early childhood was in Pocatello, Idaho. After his father died suddenly in 1950, the family moved back to his grandparents' farm near Rutledge, then a few years later to Kirksville, Missouri. Serving in the United States Army from 1960 until 1964, Jack was stationed in Korea and Germany. A favorite anecdote of his service days involved being required to play Taps for the burial of the Division mascot, a donkey.
Jack worked in construction around Northeast Missouri and in a furniture factory in Burlington, Iowa. Later he entered grocery management for Giant Foods, working in Burlington, Muscatine, Iowa City and Quincy. In 1976, he began work for Jaydon Handi-Rack, servicing non-food items to grocery and convenience stores around Western Illinois and Eastern Missouri. In 1992, he began work at the Penn Daniels (Shopko) Distribution Center. In 2006, he earned his EMT-B certification for Illinois through Blessing Hospital. He finished his active employment in security work and retired in late 2008.
Jack returned to a life of faith through the Addicts Victorious program in 2007. Melrose Chapel of Quincy made him welcome and treated him as family. His faith and devotional study strengthened him and those who knew him. Jack's intelligence, quick wit, and sense of humor were memorable. His enjoyment of and love for his family and his confidence in their strength and potential will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by a daughter, Elisabeth Anne Kerr of Quincy; a granddaughter, Anna Kathryn Kerr of Quincy; his mother, Margaret L. Snyder of Kirksville, MO; a sister, Janice Kay (Jim) Kirschman of Kirksville; a brother-in-law, Ronald (Diana) Miller of rural Centralia, MO; one nephew and two nieces; and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services: 11:00 am on Monday, August 4, 2014 at Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron George officiating.
Inurnment: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
Visitation: 10:00 to 11:00 am on Monday, August 4, 2014 in Melrose Chapel Untied Methodist Church.
