Roger Dale Stafford was executed after he received nine death sentences in Oklahoma, one for each of his known victims in Oklahoma. He didn't believe he would ever be executed and was quite shocked when that time came.

On January 12, 1974, in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Stafford and his brother Harold Stafford murdered 20-year-old Jimmy Earl Berry during a robbery of a McDonald's restaurant. Mr. Berry was a student at the University of North Alabama in Florence and was working as an assistant manager at the McDonald's. Stafford was never tried for this murder because of his death sentences in Oklahoma.

On June 22, 1978, Roger, Harold, and Roger's then-wife Verna (now Verna Monk) killed a U.S. Air Force couple and their son on the side of Interstate 35 in McClain County, Oklahoma.

On July 16, 1978, Stafford, Harold, and Verna murdered six employees during a robbery of a Sirloin Stockade restaurant in southwest Oklahoma City.

Harold was killed in a motorcycle accident six days after the Sirloin Stockade robbery and murders.

Verna received two consecutive life sentences and testified against Roger. She indicated Stafford was responsible for 34 murders in total in Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, and Maryland.

Roger and Harold came from a good background and a good family, and society will probably never know why they made these choices.
