JOHN BENZ, A PIONEER CITIZEN, DIED SUNDAY

Came to Leavenworth When The Town was a Wilderness – Erected The First Grocery Store.
John Benz, aged 75 years, one of the pioneer citizens of Leavenworth, died at his home No. 312 Ninth Avenue Sunday night at 7:30 o’clock from liver complaint. The funereal will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family residence and interment will be in Mt. Muncie cemetery.
John Benz was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, in 1827 and came to America when 21 years of age settling first at St. Louis, Mo., but later moved to Weston where he resided for six years. There he met and married his wife, who was Miss Louise Cole. He came to Leavenworth when the city was practically a wilderness and built the first grocery store at the corner of what is now Main and Cherokee streets, which building was then known as the “Levee Boat Store.”
He took up a sixty acre claim here when Delaware and Cherokee streets were grown with hazel brush and his property in now what is known as “Benz’s addition.” The deceased was a man of good education speaking several languages and at one time was rated as quite wealthy.
The following children survive the deceased:
Mrs. William Shockley, Mrs. T. Tennell, Mrs. William Nitsche, Mrs. H. J. Lansing, George E. Benz, and Harry C. Benz, all of Leavenworth, John J. Benz, postmaster of Parsons, Kan., and Mrs. H. J. Lansing, of Ceres, Okla.
