Margaret was the daughter of John Russell and Harriett "Hattie" Bright. She married Andrew, the son of William and Mary Margaret "Maggie" Rucker Hampton, on December 14, 1918 in Winchester, Kentucky. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois and returned to Winchester. From there, they relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. Their marriage ended in divorce and Margaret asked the court to restore her maiden name. She was granted custody of their daughter, Rosaline Hampton.
Andrew and Margaret reconciled and were remarried on October 27, 1926, in Cincinnati. Mrs. Hampton passed away from effects of septic peritonitis and bilateral pneumonia, following gunshot wounds. After her demise, an inquest was held and the jury's verdict stated that her death was the result of a homicide. Mrs. Hampton's remains were sent to her native Winchester for services and interment.
