before transferring to Fairview High. He graduated from there

worked in a Nursery and as a truck driver.

He came to Graymoor in 1935 after contact with Fr. Michael Sugrue, SA. George
spent one year at St. John's Seminary before entering the Novitiate on August 15, 1936 and receiving
the religious name Bartholomew. He was professed on August 16, 1937 and made his Final

a graduate degree and a Licentiate in Theology from the same institution.

Father Bartholomew was ordained to the Presbyterate by Francis Cardinal Spellman,
Archbishop of New York at St. Patick's Cathedral in New York City on January 27,1945.
Ordained with him were Fr. Regis Barber, SA, Fr. Daniel Egan, SA, Fr. Paulinas Mess, SA and
Fr. Clement St. Jacques, SA. Fr. Bart celebrated his frst Solemn Mass at his boyhood parish

Because of his interest in the Eastem Rite Churches, his frst assignment after completing
his STL was in Church Unity Octave and Vocation work. In 1948, he went to Christ the King
Church in High Point, NC where he served as Pastor for four years. He then served as Pastor of
St Anthony's Church, Hereford, TX until 1956. While at St. Anthony in Hereford, he built the
Catholic School and got involved with a confrontation with the Church of Christ which ended in
a much better understanding between Catholics and non-Catholics in the town. At that time he
retumed to Graymoor for two years as Director of the Church Unity Octave activities. In 1956 he
became the frst friar to receive bi-ritual faculties from the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental
Church which enabled him to celebrate the Liturgy in the Byzanttne Slavonic Rite as well as the
Roman Rite.

As a result of this privilege, he became a friend of Bishop Nicholas Elko of Pittsburgh,
Pa. In 1958 Fr. Bart became the pastor of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Duquesne,
PA, part of the Byzantine Diocese of Parma, OH. In 1961 he was transfeffed to a similar
position at St. Michael's Byzantine Church, Toledo, OH. From 1962 to 1968 he served as Pastor
of St. John's Byzantine Church, Detroit, MI and then moved to St Michael's Byzantine Church in
1972. Fr. Bart also served as Vocation Director, Clergy Examiner and Marriage Tribunal Judge
for the Diocese of Parma. Additionally, he was a member of the Fourth Degree, Knights of

A few years before his death, Fr. Bart, because of his great love for the Eastem Rite Church,
asked that upon his death that he be allowed to be buried in the parish cemetery of the Byzantine
Church. On May 26,1980 Fr. Bart died of cancer at the Holy Family Cancer Home, Parma, OH.
He was fifty-seven years old.

The Funeral with the Divine Liturgy was celebrated on May 29th with Most Rev. Emil
