Miles D. (Dewey) Bennett, son of N. C. and Lucy

Miles Dewey Bennett drowned in the pond behind the barn. His grandmother Lib Bennett had that premonition, it came true.

Norval was the son of Miles and Mary Elizabeth Gilson Bennett. Lucy was born in South Auburn, Pennsylvania the daughter of Calvin and Hannah Carter McLaud.
Norval Cecil Bennett married to Lucy Lucinda McLaud on March 29, 1890. Norval was born while his father Miles was serving in the Civil War. Mary (Lib) chose not to name him for quite awhile. Miles kept asking her in his letters what she named him, after all, according to the letters; a son was "worth keeping". There were many letters Miles wrote to Lib, his companion during the Civil War preserved. I have copies, as do many of the local family members. Miles always referred to his wife as his "companion". They enlighten us with much information on what was going on here, and in the war. Miles kept in touch with many of our local boys while there. Even sold a little butter in one letter regarding Thomas Potter of Stevensville.

Norval and Lucy Bennett made their home where Lynn Campbell presently resides. It has always been known as the "White Birch Farm". The White Birch School was located nearby. The White Birch Schoolhouse was moved to what we refer now to as the Walter Sharer farm about the time Walter married Mabel Wootton. They raised their family in there, it became a home. It was the little house located adjacent to the big house where Ronny and Ralph Sharer at present. Angie and Llewellyn Sharer resided there at that time.

Dr. Norval Bennett was one of the first people in the area to have a telephone, let alone having two telephones. For convenience to his customers, as the local veterinarian he had one telephone for the Camptown exchange and one for the Laceyville exchange.
