A, 158-159: Obediah Howard of County of Union for love, good will, and esteem to my som Joseph Howard of same, planter, tract of land on a branch of Fairforest called Shoaly Creek, 100 acres, being the south end of a survey granted to said Obadiah Howard 23 June 1774 of 450 acres, dated 26 june 1786. Union Dist. - An inquest indented and taken on 21 April at the house of johnnathon Hawkins on and over the body of JOSEPH HOWARD of said District who came to a violent and timely death before Benja. Kennedy, Coroner, whereas it doth appear from the evidence of Johnnathan Hawkins and others that the said JOSEPH HOWARD did on 21 April by the instigation of the devil and his own wicked heart did feloniously kill and murder himself by taking a cotton rope of the value of 12-1/2 cents, put one end around his neck and the other end he tyed to the bough of a tree and forthwith did stifle himself to death. Dated 21 April 1821.
