The word "haugh" in the Gaelic language means "of or by the water"! The Haugh family lived near and around the water no matter where they moved.
William came with his wife and four children from England to Canada by 1858. His last child was born in Berlin/Kitchener about 1859. He settled his family in Wallace Twp., Perth County, Ontario. He died in that area only a few years after his arrival.
His obituary from "The Carlisle Journal", Tuesday, March 31, 1863 states "Near Wallace, Upper Canada West, on the 2nd inst., William Haugh, formerly of Stainton and Cargo, ---much respected by all his friends."
