Viola Margerite (Mullen) Edwards was born May 13,1922 to parents Alfred Samuel and Tina Gaynelle (Tobias) Mullen, in Salmon, Idaho. She started school at Tendoy in 1927 when she was 5 years old. She had scarlet fever, chicken pox and measles and started school again in 1929, continuing through the 8th grade. To get to school she rode her horse. In the winter, the school children would pile into a wagon driven by a parent or neighbor. On the floor of the wagon parents would place hot rocks to keep the children's feet warm and bundle them with blankets for the ride to school. She remembers walking to school down the Tendoy lane. She had to wear long brown socks and garters because the wind came right down that road. Viola also attended school in Fruitland, Idaho and Ontario, Oregon, the first 6 weeks of each year, while her parents picked and canned fruit and visited relatives there. She attended as a freshman at Salmon, a sophomore and junior at Leadore and senior at Salmon were she graduated in 1940. She was a very responsible girl. Her job at age 13 was to ride her horse to deliver the news from Hayden Creek to the Tendoy Store so it could be delivered to Salmon for printing into the newspaper. She spent her summers with her parents in the mountains of Central Idaho in the Yellow Jacket and Forney country. Her father was a packer and delivered groceries and mail to the camps in that area along with grazing a herd of sheep. She worked one year at the Ben Franklin 5 & 10 Cent store and the Rose Hospital during one summer. In 1941 she went to Link's School of Business in Boise, Idaho. In August of 1942 she married Eugene Edwards. They were the fourth generations on the Centennial Ranch started in 1993. They raised Hereford cattle for 53 years. During World War II, Eugene milked 30 cows and had two units of milking machines. Vi washed the units and separators every day. She raised turkeys, chickens and a garden. She canned many pints and quarts of vegetables, and fruits from the orchards, made lard, headcheese, mince meat, cheese, butter, sauerkraut, soap and hand lotion. There were always bottles of homemade root beer aging behind the furnace. They butchered, cut and wrapped beef, pigs and deer. For 34 years from 1954 to 1988, she tended the camp on the cattle drive which consisted of cooking, and moving the camp daily. In 1967 they bought the ranch and other holdings and leased an adjoining ranch for hay and grazing. She was seen on the tractors raking, baling, brushing or driving truck for the cowboys into her late 70's. She also loved to sew and spent countless hours making shirts for the boys and dresses for the girls. She was a 4H leader of Rainbow Ranchers for 5 years, teaching cooking, sewing, gardening and home improvement. In 1970, she served as secretary for Lemhi Cattlewomen and in 1972 she was president of Lemhi Cattlewomen. She joined the Anna Rebecca Lodge #14 when she was a freshman in high school and during the next 63 years, she held various chairs. was secretary for 5 years and then in 1990 she served as Noble Grands, during the Centennial year of the I.O.O.F.
