This brick marks the grave where William Saunders (Burk/Berk) Duty is buried. If it ever had a marker it is long gone, but William's namesake and nephew, Berk Barrett (1900-1995,)a long time resident of Pontotoc and a sexton of the Pontotoc Cemetery, kept William Saunders Barrett's grave marked all these years. Berk eventually cemented the brick there, so the grass would not grow over it, and he could always find it. Berk Barrett was named after this uncle, and always put flowers on his grave every Memorial Day, and Berk's descendants still do. Berk showed two of his daughters all the graves in the Pontotoc Cemetery where he wanted flowers placed, we think for the ones who did not have family around to place flowers. Only because Berk was so careful to mark William's grave do we know it's location today.

William Saunders "Burk/Berk" Duty is buried next to his uncle A. P. Owens and A.P. is buried next to his sister Mary Owen Duty Vandiver, William Saunders mother. On the other side of William is Sam Sealey first husband of Maggie Duty, his niece and daughter of William Phillip Duty.

William Saunders "Burk/Berk" Barrett was a son of Samuel Houston Duty and Mary Elizabeth Owen Duty. Samuel Houston Duty was born in 1836 in Texas and died in 1879 in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas. His burial place is unknown.
