Her father, James Brown, built the house on the Mississippi Coast that later was named "Beauvoir" and sold to Jefferson Davis. The Brown family lived in the house from 1848, when it was built, until the beginning of the Civil War, when they moved inland for safety. After the early death of her husband, James Martin Heathman, she remarried.
