Mr. Sherrod was a lifelong resident of Colbert County, living all of his adult life in Tuscumbia. He was best known for his real estate expertise, community involvement, and unique wit and humor. He was a wonderful husband, cherished father and grandfather.James Sherrod was born on Oct. 28, 1931, in rural Colbert County to Irvin and Rudell Sherrod. He attended Cherokee Vocational School, graduating in 1949. James enlisted in the Air force during the Korean War, remaining stateside in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he met Nancy Elizabeth Singletary whom he married in 1952. After leaving the Air Force, James moved his family back to Tuscumbia. In 1963, he opened Sherrod Realty Company which he operated for 25 years. In 1982, James was appointed by the Alabama Senate Prison Oversight Committee to act a liaison to the prison system. He continued in that role for the next 26 years until retiring in 2008. James Sherrod was a member of the Tuscumbia Church of Christ. He was a founding member of the Tuscumbia Men's Club (originally Young Men's Club) serving as president. He was also a member of the Tuscumbia Civitan Club and the Shoals Quarterback Club. He was an active member of the Tennessee Valley Country Club for many years. James was an active golfer for all of his life, known for his long drives and deadeye putting. Mr. Sherrod was the great-grandson of two Civil War veterans. He was very proud of his Southern heritage and remained interested in American history and politics.Mr. Sherrod was father to Deb, Scott, and Barbie. No one could have asked for a better, more attentive father. He set an example of honesty, integrity, and compassion. James taught his children the value of being responsible for their actions and keeping their word. He loved and respected his wife of 60 years, Nancy. While sometimes being considered impatient and gruff on the outside, at his core he was an extremely loving man with the heart of a child. James was a very private man. Few knew the depth of his character or the scope of his playfulness. He will be missed by all who knew him and will forever remain in the hearts of those that loved him. Mr. Sherrod was preceded in death by his precious wife, Nancy, and brother, Kenneth.He is survived by son, Scott (Laura), of Plantation, Florida; daughters, Debra James (Harry) and Barbie Earnest (Steve), of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; sisters, Jean Wainwright, of Sheffield, and Sue Warhurst (Tommy), of Russellville; and grandchildren, Joshua James, Matthew James, Abigail Earnest, Stephen Earnest, Zachary Earnest, Mattie Earnest, James Sherrod, and Hannah Sherrod.Services will be held Friday, Aug. 1, at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The funeral will follow at 1 pm. Bob Plunket, a man that Mr. Sherrod held in the highest esteem, will be offering remarks of remembrance.
