I have listed John's birthplace as Rowan County, North Carolina; it is possible however that he was actually born in Pennsylvania. His father was named John and his mother was either Francis or Catherine.

Married Jane "Fanny" Welty around 1787.

The couple had eleven children starting with Catherine, then James, Mary "Polly", Christiana, John, Rachel, William, Elizabeth, Abraham, Henry and Daniel.

Information about John's religious background includes the following two stories:

-John was an ordained Dunker minister who, about 1792, in Rowan County, North Carolina, became involved in a heresy over the doctrines of Restitution and Universalism.

-John was a member of the Brethren Church and some of the families, including John's, planned to migrate to White Water, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri in 1814; however John died before the migration.
