Clarence "Goose" Gulseth, 89, Blackduck, died August 14, 2001 at the Greensview Health Care Center in Bagley.

He was born September 9, 1911 in Grygla to Andrew and Anna Gulseth. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended school and graduated from Thief River Falls.

He started working for the L.B. Hartz Company at the age of 20 and was manager of the billing department of the warehouse for 14 years.

He married Agnes Olson in 1937 in Thief River Falls. They moved to Blackduck in 1947 where he and Al Jaranson bought the Hartz and Gamble Store. The later dissolved their partnership and he became the sole owner of the Hartz store.

In 1966 he formed Gulseth, Inc. with Larry Gulseth, Keith Anderson, and Carl Kubiak. He retired in 1985.

His wife died in 1970 and he married Esther Page in 1972 in Hines.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck for over 50 years and held several offices. He was a charter member of the Blackduck Development Corporation, member of Civic and Commerce Association, member of the Blackduck Golf Course for 50 years, served on the Blackduck School Board for 14 years, member of Minnesota food retailers, member of the Elks Lodge and was a Mason and Shriner for over 50 years.

He spent his winters in Mission, Texas from 1978-1999. He was an avid wood carver in El Valle Del Sal trailer park were he spent 22 winters. He was a member of Rio Grande Wood Carvers of McAllen, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of Blackduck; a son, Larry Gulseth of Baudette; a daughter, Pat Kubiak of Bagley; a stepdaughter, Susan Grosklag of St. Paul; a stepson Phillip Page of Bemidji; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and a sister Ardith Jaranson of Bemidji.

He was preceded in death by his parent; two brothers, Clarence and Arthur and three sisters, Ida, Stella, and Doris.

He was married to Annie Gulseth (35) born about 1885 in Norway and immigrated 1905. Children: Stella (12), Clarence (8), and Ida (6). Living with them was a widowed brother-in-law - Andrew Torkelson (45) born about 1875 in Norway and immigrated 1892. Andrew Torkelson also had a son - Tenny (13) born about 1907 in Minnesota.

1930 Census: Andrew Gulseth (58) and Anna Gulseth (46) were living in Thief River Falls, Pennington, Minnesota. His occupation - stone cutter in Memorial industry. Children: Clarence (18), Ida S (16), and Cora Ardith (9). Andrew's widowed sister was living with them also - Lee Emma Gulseth (62) born about 1868 in Minnesota.
