John R. Childress was born March 20, 1920, in Bell County. He grew up in Slaton and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Staff Sergeant Childress was shot down over Germany and was a prisoner of war for 14 months. He moved to Abernathy in 1954 and worked as a parts man at Abernathy Motor Co., and later was parts man for Pioneer-Lincoln Mercury in Lubbock. He was a member of Cornerstone Assembly of God and a lifetime member of the Ex-POW Chapter in Lubbock. He married Vernell Parks in Slaton Texas June 9, 1948.
John Childress died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, in Covenant Hospital Lubbock Texas.
Funeral services for Ray Childress, 79, were at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Barry Tilley, pastor of Cornerstone Assembly of God in Lubbock, and the Rev. T.N. Teeter of Olton officiating.
