Hazleton Standard Speaker, October 24, 1979:
James E. Carey, of 1105 Burton St., Freeland, died at 12:30 a.m. yesterday at St. Joseph Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Freeland, a son of the late Patrick and Amanda Kugler Carey, he was a member of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Freeland, and had been employed as an oiler and breaker engineer with Jeddo-Highland Coal Co. until his retirement. He was a member of St. Ann's Band, Freeland Elks Lodge 1145, Freeland Aerie of Eagles 717, and Freeland Sons of Erin.

He was preceded in death by the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Anna Broskoskie, Mrs. Bridget Yori, Mrs. Susan McBrairty, Mrs. Elizabeth DeBlass, Margaret Carey, David, Patrick and John Carey. Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday from the McNulty Funeral Home, Freeland, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Ann's Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
