David Baker Elson served as a Private with Company C and then Hospital Steward in Field & Staff of the 90-day 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment during the Civil War from April to August, 1861. He then served as a Private in Company C and then Hospital Steward in Field & Staff of the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry from September 10, 1861 to October 18, 1864. Elson was then commissioned into the 195th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as an Assistant Surgeon on March 20, 1865 and was mustered out of the service on December 18, 1865. He became a medical doctor after the war.
