He was the son of John Thomas & Catherine (Richards) Riley.

He married Margaret Brusha, 25 Sept 1849, Pickaway County, Ohio.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Pickaway County. In about 1858 he moved his young family to the Nebraska Territory.

The daguerreotype photo was said to have been taken before 1860. The silver is releasing from the copper but the basic image can still be seen.

James and his brother John R. both enlisted in the Army of the United States of America on the same day at Falls City, Nebraska. They were at the Battle of Whitestone Hill, in the Dekota Territory, where they engaged the Pawnee Indians.

He was mustered out 14 Dec 1863 in Falls City, Nebraska Territory.

Shortly after he returned home family lore has it that he was murdered. He was said to have been hung in a tree near his home by a gang that did not approve of his service in the army.

He was the father of five children;

4. Armance b-1859
5. John Oliver b-12 Mar 1861
