In 1954, while serving in North Carolina, he met and married Joyce Strickland, daughter of the late Stanford and Josephine Hinson Strickland of Cerro Gordo, NC, on October 23, 1954, in Conway, SC. In 1963, after graduating from East Carolina University, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps and retired 16 years later as a Major. During this time, he was selected to attend Graduate School at the University of Kentucky. earning an MBA in August, 1971. After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1979, Walter taught several years in the North Carolina Community College System and also served as a Bi-Vocational Pastor for churches in the New South River Baptist Association. In 1991, he was recalled to active duty. He became disabled and was medically retired from the Army in 1992.
In the following years, he taught an adult Sunday School. His hobbies included stock market, fresh water fishing, and entertaining friends and family. He was a Master Mason and a Life Member of the UK Alumni Association, Disabled American Veterans, National Association of Uniform Services and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is preceded in death by his sister Roberta Lowman and her husband John, of Franklin, OH.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce, and sons, Michael Clay and wife Stacey, of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Reginald Ray and his wife, Ann of Boonton Township, NJ. He is also survived by a sister, Alpha Mae Combs and her husband, Bobby of Washington Courthouse, OH; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29th from 6:00PM to 8:00PM in the TimberRidge Chapel of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 9695 SW 110th St., Ocala, FL 34481. Funeral Service will be held at College Road Baptist Church, 5010 SW College Road, Ocala, Hwy 200, on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 10:30AM. Burial will follow at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
