Mrs. Byrd was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Cleveland to the late Dr. Thomas James and Ollie Mae Anderson McDonald. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Byrd was a graduate of Cleveland High School; she attended North Georgia College for two years, and then attended Brenau College for two years, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.
After leaving Brenau College, Mrs. Byrd worked as the personal secretary for then-Gov. Herman Talmadge, where she met her husband, Thomas Eugene Byrd. Mr. and Mrs. Byrd moved to Reynolds after marrying. They lived in Reynolds for 17 years, during which time her husband was a peach farmer, and she was a homemaker and later employed with Flint Electric Co. In 1967, Mr. and Mrs. Byrd moved to Gainesville. Mrs. Byrd retired in 1982 after many years of service as a claims examiner with the Georgia Department of Labor.
Mrs. Byrd is preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Thomas Eugene Byrd; brother, Thomas James McDonald Jr.; and sister, Billie McDonald Blackshear.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Cheryl Byrd of Gainesville; daughter, Susan Smithson of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tom Cheek of Atlanta; son, Charlie Byrd of Gainesville; grandchildren, Kyle Friese, Eric, Jamie and Ashley Smithson, Jason, Lauren, Andrew, Zachary, Kathryn and Tom Cheek, and Chuck, Christy, Carley, Carson and Camille Byrd; sister-in-law, Mickey McDonald of Gainesville; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and loving friends.
