PHOENIX, Arizona - Kenneth W. Schlutz, 86, a former resident of Muscatine, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at the Hawthorn Court in Phoenix, from Alzheimer’s.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Don Swanson of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Schlutz was born on Jan. 4, 1915, in Muscatine, the son of George and Mary Ellen Eutsler Schlutz. He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1933. He married Dorothy A. Greenwald on May 17, 1939, in Muscatine.

He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and served on its Board of Trustees. He was a past Master of Iowa Lodge No. 2 and belonged to the Kaaba Shrine. He also served as a past president of the Muscatine Board of Realtors. As a young man he was a member of the Boys’ Band of Muscatine and also the Moose Band. He began his working career managing the Motor Vehicle Department in the Muscatine County Court House; he then worked as a store-keeper in the Army Depot in Somerville, NJ during World War II; he later worked as a controller for the H.J. Heinz company in Muscatine; he owned and operated several businesses in Muscatine including the Schlutz Neon Sign Company, real estate and insurance businesses, and was one of the founders of the Lumber Mart and Discount Furniture Center in Muscatine. Before his retirement, he managed the Big E. Home Center in West Burlington. He enjoyed woodworking, painting, fishing and traveling. He was a devoted husband and father.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Schlutz of Sun Lakes, Arizona; two daughters, Marian Rummel and her husband, Gerald, of Burnsville, Minn. and Katherine Skrei and her husband, William, of Sun Lakes, Arizona; three grandchildren, Wendy Avigliano and her husband, Anthony, of Mesa, Arizona, Steven Nordgren and his wife, Lisa, of Burnsville, Minn. and Julie Ann Skrei of Chandler, Arizona; and two great-granddaughters, Sara and Alison Nordgren of Burnsville, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
