He was the son of Don Custer and Dorothy Thompson Custer Grabner.

On the 1950 Census for Renton, Washington, the marital status of his mother is Divorced.

On August 7, 1966 as Bert Harris Custer, he married Shirley Yvonne Bakken Smith at Renton, Washington.


He was born in Seattle, Washington on July 30, 1937. He graduated from Renton High School in 1955 and attended the University of Washington for two years before being appointed to the United States Military Academy. He graduated from the USMA in 1961 joining the Infantry. His career included two tours in Vietnam, duty as a General's Aide and an assignment with NATO. He also graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Leavenworth, Kansas and obtained a Master's degree in Mathematics. In 1986, he retired and returned to Renton where he taught Trigonometry and Calculus. He and his wife celebrated 46 years of marriage on August 7. He died on September 4, 2012 in Seattle. He was preceded in death by his brother, Alec N. Custer [1940-2003], his sister-in-law, Barbara Custer and his sister, Maribeth Zwick. Survivors included his wife, one son of New York City, one granddaughter, one brother, two sisters, five nieces and three nephews. A celebration of Life was held at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton in November. Remembrances to the Renton History Museum or charity of choice was suggested.
