Second Lieutenant Welch was shot down and killed by 'The Red Baron', Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, who was flying his Albatros D.III (2253/17) aircraft. RFC Sergeant Amos George TOLLERVEY also perished in the attack.
