After growing up on the Bellows farm in Iowa, John followed other family members to Wyoming, where he worked on ranches. Then he went up to Montana where he married Lucille Wood. The couple moved to Michigan and had four children. John drove a Greyhound bus during WWII. He married Geraldine (Geri) and had four more children. John and Geri moved to Mesa, AZ, where he managed construction operations and large-scale farm operations.

While living in Wyoming, John killed rattlesnakes, put the rattles in his cowboy hat band, slung his guitar on his back, and rode off into the sunset. He played and sang at barn dances and on the radio in Montana. In his later years, he took up oil painting.
