"On Sunday night last near Telegraph City in this county a most outrageous murder was committed. Mr. Adam Schaffer, a well known and highly respected citizen, was called out of his house about 8 o'clock in the evening. As he stepped out the door he was shot dead by a Mexican".
Adam's daughter Anna heard her father cry out and the firing of a shot. She ran out of the house and stumbled over her father's body.
He was murdered by a Chilean named Jose Rameros, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder, but died in the county jail the day he was sentenced.
It was believed the murder was hired by Jacob Peter Syler, who was married to Barbara Coon/Kunh, a daughter of Shafer's wife. There had been trouble between then over the price of land. Jacob Peter Syler was sentenced to 5 years in San Quentin Prison on charges of being an accessory after the fact to murder. He was admitted to San Quentin on 12/19/1876 and was discharged on 6/21/1880.
Adam Schafer married Julia Behrendt Coon/Kuhn 5/11/1854 in French Camp, San Joaquin Co. Julianne Shafer died in 1871 and Adam Shafer married Mrs. Mary Baumhogger on 4/26/1875.
The children of Adam and Julianne were Anna, who married Lafayette Spellman on 12/18/1878; Henry; George and Albert.
